William Irwin Thompson (born July ) is an American poet and cultural philosopher. Known primarily as a philosopher and cultural critic, he has also written and published poetry throughout his career. He is the founder of the Lindisfarne Association. Thompson was born in Chicago and grew up in Los Angeles. He earned a B.A. at Pomona College and a Ph.D. at Cornell University. He was a. The author of two books on Percy Bysshe Shelley, Abbey taught at U Toronto, where he earned his PhD (), and at U British Columbia. His strongly imagistic poetry, best represented inSelected Poems –, examines the geology and marine life of the Pacific.
